This is making the determination process for the Social Security Administration harder than ever. More applications translates into less time on each file and ultimately, more denials. To make matters worse, applicants are also seeking unemployment benefits, which creates a host of issues on its own.

On Thursday, September 30th, Markhoff & Mittman was pleased to broadcast live from Grand Central Station, one of the most populated hubs in New York City. In an attempt to continue our longstanding series of disability webcasts, Brian Mittman and Scott Daniels discussed a special event staged by the New York Workers Compensation Alliance.

Executive Director Jeffrey Fenster and members of the New York State Workers Compensation Board appeared in a town-hall meeting in New York city to discuss some of the problems with the workers compensation system. The attorneys from Markhoff & Mittman were in attendance and to get a glimpse of what was discussed, you must listen to this webcast.

Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from Social Security Administration Deputy Commissioner Glenn Sklar. This was a phenomenal opportunity for us lawyers to find out just exactly what the Administration is doing – and plans on doing – to improve the disability program. With all the talk about Social Security funds disappearing at a rapid rate, Sklar reassured us that the disability program is not going anywhere. That said, many changes are coming. Sklar did mention that the number one priority of the Social Security Administration is to reduce the backlog of pending disability cases.

The highlight of the afternoon session included a forum on Social Security’s new electronic records access. Attorneys and representatives now have access to their claimant’s files right over the internet. The in-depth discussion taught attendees how to use the program, how efficient it can be and lastly, how to troubleshoot.

Day 2 was jam-packed with new and exciting things that face the Social Security Disability program. Day 3 should be just as good so stay tuned…..
