The Social Security Administration certainly wants to know about a claimant’s physical or emotional impairments. But did you know that a claimant’s employment history is a major factor in whether a claimant can be determined disabled?

A work history provides insight into how long a potential disability recipient has contributed into the Social Security system. Someone with a long and steady work history will be favored by a disability ananlyst or Administrative Law Judge because the program was designed to compensate individuals who have contributed into the system.

A work history also provides information about the claimant’s job skills. Claimant’s who have held supervisory roles or positions that require a particular skillset might be more employable than a claimant who has worked in one industry all of their lives.

Social Security is interested in a person’s work history over the last 15 years. Each and every job held in the last 15 years can potentially shed light on what a claimant might be able to do in the workforce.

Ever wonder why someone’s employment history is crucial in determining if a person should be entitled to social security disability benefits? A major misconception in the world of disability is that only a person’s medical condition matters when the Social Securty Administration decides if a person is disabled. This is simply not true.

A claimant’s medical condition is a big factor, but it’s not the only one in determining whether or not a person is entitled to disability benefits. A claimant’s earnings over the years and their employment history is also a major factor in the decision process.

Why does this matter?

For most people, as they earn a paycheck, they contribute into the social security system by paying social security taxes. By doing this, a person is insuring themselves for social security benefits.

National Disability Employment Month - a time to consider people with disability and the benefit they provide to the American workforce

October has been officially designated by Congress as National Disability Employment Month (see Obama’s Presidential Proclamation); an effort to educate the American public about issues related to disability and employment. This recogniziton began in 1945 at the close of the Second World War.

By helping focus public efforts on American Workers with disabilities, and the contributions and skills brought to the work force it is believed that the barriers to employment of such individuals can be lowered, removed and the entire American workforce improved.

This is a particularly poignant time to consider this when viewing the economy and the numbers of disabled Americans, whether from birth defects, accidents, injuries, war veterans or others it is an aspect of society we must consider. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics just released its September 2009 data showing that the unemployment rate of individuals with disabilty was 16.2 percent, cmpared to 9.2 percent of non disabled individuals!
