It’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month!

October has been officially designated by Congress as National Disability Employment Month (see Obama’s Presidential Proclamation); an effort to educate the American public about issues related to disability and employment. This recogniziton began in 1945 at the close of the Second World War.

By helping focus public efforts on American Workers with disabilities, and the contributions and skills brought to the work force it is believed that the barriers to employment of such individuals can be lowered, removed and the entire American workforce improved.

This is a particularly poignant time to consider this when viewing the economy and the numbers of disabled Americans, whether from birth defects, accidents, injuries, war veterans or others it is an aspect of society we must consider. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics just released its September 2009 data showing that the unemployment rate of individuals with disabilty was 16.2 percent, cmpared to 9.2 percent of non disabled individuals!
