It’s how YOU define Disability!

As an attorney handling Workers Compensation and Social Security Disability Claims I deal with people who have become disabled as a result of injuries, illnesses and disease. The fact that I help individuals who have become disabled from work has always had me wonder how they can best reintegrate themselves into “mainstream” life. In doing some research about National Disability Employment Awareness Month I have come across a lot of information and wonderful programs and people that have helped me to redefine both the term disabled and “mainstream” and I am better for it.

The best way to describe this is by recalling my recent Google Search on the terms “special achievements of disabled workers and athletes”. What I found is not only special, but the disabled part is almost meaningless! In August of 2009 the 100th Local Chapter joined Disabled Sports USA. What could be more reassuring and inspirational then the Mission Statement of Disable Sports USA:

“Disabled Sport USA’s mission is to provide national leadership and opportunities for individuals with disabilities to develop independence, confidence and fitness through participation in community sports, recreation and educational programs.”

Wow! This from a group founded in 1967 by Vietnam Veterans to help serve war injured. This group now serves America and those fellow Americans that could be considered for some mental or physical reason to be disabled!

Check out this site WWW.DSUSA.ORG it is fantastic, as their logo states “If I can do this, I can do anything”!
